The Bentley Mulsanne is the flagship Bentley saloon and the most significant car in the Starr Bentley fleet from a historical standpoint. Production ended in 2020 after Bentley built the final example for Queen Elizabeth II, making every remaining Mulsanne a car with no successor. The engine is the defining characteristic. The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V8 is a direct descendant of an engine first introduced by Bentley in 1959, making it the longest-running engine in the history of the brand. Each unit is hand-built at Bentley’s Crewe factory by a single technician who signs their name to the engine before it is installed. The result is 530HP and, more significantly, 1,100Nm of torque, the highest torque figure of any naturally aspirated petrol engine in a production saloon car at the time of the Mulsanne’s production. That torque arrives from just 1,750rpm and gives the car a character that is entirely unlike the W12 models in the fleet. The Mulsanne does not feel fast in the way that the Continental GT does. It feels effortless in a way that very few cars in any price range manage to replicate.

Both the Mulsanne and the Bentley Flying Spur are four door Bentley saloons. The differences are fundamental. The Flying Spur is built on the MSB platform shared with the Porsche Panamera and uses the W12 engine with all wheel drive. The Mulsanne has its own dedicated platform built specifically around the car, uses its hand-built V8 with rear-wheel drive, and at 5,575mm is 285mm longer than the Flying Spur. That length is in the rear passenger compartment. The Mulsanne long-wheelbase extended its rear seat space further with a partition between the driver and rear passengers, a refrigerator, and a fold-out desk. The Mulsanne is a rear-seat car first and a driver’s car second. The Flying Spur is more balanced between the two. For the full formal limousine experience the kind of rear cabin that places the Mulsanne in direct competition with the Rolls-Royce Ghost rather than the Bentley Flying Spur the Mulsanne is the only car in the Starr fleet that delivers it.

Every vehicle in our fleet is maintained to the highest standards to ensure safety, performance, and a flawless driving experience.
The Mulsanne covers motorway distances with a refinement that is measurably better than most other saloons at any price. The dedicated platform and the long wheelbase combine to produce a ride that isolates road surface imperfections at a level that the shorter MSB-platform cars cannot match. At 2,650kg it is a heavy car and this is evident in the way it takes corners — it does not handle like the Continental GT and was never designed to. What it does with that weight is absorb it into a composed, smooth, unhurried character that makes long motorway journeys from London to Edinburgh or Manchester to Cornwall feel shorter than they are. In rear wheel drive configuration the engine’s 1,100Nm provides quiet, linear acceleration at any speed with no drama and no noise above a distant V8 rumble. For anyone being driven rather than driving, the rear cabin on a long UK motorway journey in a Mulsanne is among the best environments available in any hired car.
The Bentley Mulsanne is also available with a professional driver through our Bentley chauffeur service.

No. Bentley ended Mulsanne production in 2020 after building the final example for Queen Elizabeth II. Every Mulsanne in existence is therefore a car with no direct successor. The 6.75 litre hand-built V8 engine that powered it, a direct descendant of an engine first used by Bentley in 1959, is no longer produced. Hiring a Mulsanne is an opportunity to drive a car that cannot be bought new anywhere in the world.
The Mulsanne is a rear-wheel drive flagship limousine on its own dedicated platform, 5,575mm long with a hand-built 6.75-litre V8 producing 1,100Nm of torque. The Flying Spur is an all-wheel drive grand touring saloon on the MSB platform shared with the Porsche Panamera, 5,290mm long with a W12 engine. The Mulsanne is longer, heavier and more formal. The Flying Spur is more dynamically capable. For rear-seat passengers on long journeys, the Mulsanne. For a driver who also wants four-door practicality, the Flying Spur.
The Bentley Mulsanne’s 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 1,100Nm of torque, available from 1,750rpm. This was the highest torque figure of any naturally aspirated petrol engine in a production saloon at the time of the car’s production and gives the Mulsanne its characteristic effortless acceleration at all speeds.
