Hire an Aston Martin DB11 Volante in the UK

The Aston Martin DB11 Volante is the open-top convertible version of the DB11 grand tourer, sharing the same bonded aluminium VH platform, the same 503HP AMG-derived twin-turbo V8 engine and the same rear-wheel drive architecture as the coupe. Volante is the name Aston Martin has used for its open-top models since the 1960s. The DB11 Volante uses an electrically operated soft-top roof that opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 31mph. The triple-layer fabric construction includes an acoustic inner liner that reduces wind and road noise when the roof is raised to within a few decibels of the DB11 coupe. With the roof raised it has a top speed of 187mph. The Volante weighs 1,842kg — approximately 72kg more than the coupe — as a result of the roof mechanism and the additional structural reinforcement required to maintain body rigidity without the contribution made by the coupe’s fixed roof. The bonded aluminium structure has been specifically engineered for the Volante to compensate for this. The result is a car that provides grand touring capability, open-air driving and Aeroblade active aerodynamics in a single package that no direct competitor in the same price bracket currently offers.

Aeroblade active aerodynamics

The DB11 Volante carries the Aeroblade system from the coupe as a standard feature. Rather than using a visible rear spoiler, the system draws air through intake vents in the C-pillar, channels it through the body and releases it from a slot across the full width of the bootlid. This creates a curtain of air that acts as a virtual spoiler, generating downforce without adding visual bulk to the rear of the car. In the Volante this is a more significant engineering achievement than in the coupe — retaining the aerodynamic system in a convertible body requires the internal ducting to be redesigned around the roof mechanism and the modified rear structure. At low speeds the system is inactive. At higher speeds the air management system opens automatically without any driver input. The DB11 Volante is the only open-top car in the Starr Aston Martin fleet to use the Aeroblade system.

DB11 Volante vs DB11 coupe — which one?

The DB11 coupe and the DB11 Volante use the same 503HP V8 engine, the same 8-speed automatic gearbox and the same rear-wheel drive chassis. The coupe weighs approximately 72kg less at 1,770kg, has a marginally stiffer body and reaches an identical top speed of 187mph. The Volante adds an electrically operated soft-top that opens in 14 seconds at up to 31mph, a triple-layer acoustic roof liner that brings wind and road noise close to the coupe’s levels when raised, and the specific experience of open-air grand touring that no fixed-roof car can replicate. For a driver choosing between the two, the question is straightforward: if open-air driving is part of the reason for the hire, the Volante is the answer. If maximum body stiffness and the lightest possible car are the priority, the coupe is the answer. Both share the Aeroblade active aerodynamic system. The Volante is available at a slightly higher hire rate than the coupe reflecting the additional engineering and equipment.

The DB11 Volante on UK roads

The DB11 Volante covers UK roads in the same way as the DB11 coupe with one additional dimension available whenever conditions allow the option to drive open-top. On motorways in GT mode with the roof raised, the triple-layer acoustic soft-top suppresses wind noise to a level that allows normal conversation and audio enjoyment at motorway speeds. The adaptive dampers in this mode provide a composed and refined ride over UK motorway surfaces. On open A-roads in Sport mode with the roof down, the exhaust note of the twin-turbo V8 is more present and immediate than in the coupe the separation from the fixed cabin structure means sound reaches the occupants more directly. The front-mid-engine layout and the rear-wheel drive chassis behave identically to the coupe in this mode. The Volante’s additional 72kg is not perceptible in normal driving conditions and only becomes apparent at the very limit of the car’s handling envelope, which on public UK roads is academic. For a driver who wants Aston Martin grand touring character with the option of open-air driving on suitable days, the Volante provides everything the coupe offers with that additional capability preserved.
