Hire an Audi R8 V10 Plus in the UK

The Audi R8 V10 Plus is the fixed-roof coupe version of the R8 V10, sharing the same 5.2 litre naturally aspirated V10 engine, the same quattro all wheel drive system and the same aluminium and carbon fibre Space Frame chassis as the R8 Spyder convertible. Where the Spyder has an electrically operated soft-top roof mechanism that adds approximately 50kg, the V10 Plus coupe has a fixed carbon fibre roof panel that contributes to an overall kerb weight of 1,454kg. This makes the R8 V10 Plus one of the lightest cars in the Starr fleet relative to its power output. The ratio of 620HP to 1,454kg gives a power-to-weight figure of approximately 426HP per tonne, comparable to purpose-built track focused cars that sacrifice refinement and daily usability to achieve similar numbers. The R8 achieves this while remaining practical enough for UK road use, with a functioning boot, a reasonable ride quality in comfort mode and the full Audi electronics package including adaptive cruise control, lane assist and rear parking sensors.

The V10 Plus vs the R8 Spyder

The R8 V10 Plus coupe and the R8 Spyder use identical engines, identical all-wheel drive systems and are built on the same platform. The differences are the roof and the weight. The coupe’s fixed carbon fibre roof is structurally stiffer than the Spyder’s reinforced open-top chassis, which means the coupe has a marginal advantage in torsional rigidity that is perceptible at the limit on a track but not on public roads. The coupe reaches a top speed of 205mph versus 204mph for the Spyder. The Spyder weighs approximately 50kg more as a result of the roof mechanism. For a driver who wants the open-air V10 experience the Spyder is the choice. For a driver who wants the lightest, most structurally pure version of the R8 platform, the coupe is the answer. Both are now discontinued, with the final R8 production run completed in 2023.

The R8 V10 Plus on UK roads

The R8 V10 Plus is accessible on UK roads across a wider range of conditions than its performance figures suggest. In comfort mode the magnetic ride suspension softens sufficiently for urban driving without feeling disconnected. The quattro all wheel drive provides confident traction in UK wet conditions. The seven-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox is smooth in automatic mode at low speeds and responds quickly to paddle shifts at higher speeds. The V10 produces modest torque at low revs and builds power sharply from 4,000rpm to its 8,700rpm redline a character that rewards drivers who use the full rev range on open roads. At motorway speeds the cabin is quieter than many turbocharged performance cars because the naturally aspirated engine is not working hard to maintain pace, and the fixed coupe roof provides better wind noise suppression than the Spyder. The R8 V10 Plus is best experienced on open UK roads where the rev range can be used fully: the A83 through Argyll, the A470 through Mid Wales or the A686 through the northern Pennines each suit the car well.
