The Audi R8 V10 Spyder

The R8 Spyder is the open top version of the Audi R8 V10, built around a naturally aspirated 5.2 litre V10 engine that produces 620HP in Performance quattro specification. It is one of a diminishing number of road cars that uses a large naturally aspirated engine with no turbocharging, which means the power builds linearly with engine speed all the way to its 8,700rpm redline. The result is a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 204mph. The same V10 engine, in a slightly different state of tune, powers the Lamborghini Huracan. In the R8 it sits in a mid engine position behind the cabin, driving all four wheels through the quattro all wheel drive system and a seven speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox. The aluminium and carbon fibre Space Frame chassis was engineered at Audi Sport in Neckarsulm, and the entire car is hand assembled at the Bollinger Hofe facility in a process that takes significantly longer per car than a conventional production line.

With the final production run completed in 2023, every R8 now in existence is one of the last examples of a naturally aspirated mid engine supercar from a major manufacturer. Audi has confirmed the R8 nameplate will not continue in its current form.
