Bugatti Veyron hire London: what you are actually driving

The Veyron uses an 8.0-litre W16 engine with four turbochargers producing 1,001 bhp and 922 lb-ft of torque. It has ten radiators. It has four-wheel drive. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox completes a shift in less than 150 milliseconds. At 253 mph, the aerodynamic drag alone is equivalent to driving into a solid wall of air. The engineering required to reach that speed in a road car, stop safely from it, and do it repeatedly without structural failure is the reason the Veyron cost more to build than it sold for. Bugatti produced each car at a loss. The purpose was to prove it could be done.

The Super Sport variant, tested on 6 April 2013, reached 268 mph. It held the Guinness World Record for the fastest production car at the time of that test. The standard Veyron EB 16.4 available on hire is not the Super Sport, but it is 1,001 bhp in a vehicle that weighs 1,888 kg and has been validated at the absolute limit of what road car engineering allows.
