The Rolls-Royce Story – Why It Still Matters When You Hire One in 2025-2026
On 4 May 1904, in the Midland Hotel in Manchester, two men shook hands over lunch and changed luxury forever.
Charles Rolls – aristocratic racing driver, aviator, and Britain’s third-ever licensed pilot – wanted the finest car in the world. Henry Royce – self-taught electrical engineer from humble Lincolnshire roots – had already built it in his Cooke Street workshop in 1904: the quietest, smoothest, most reliable motor car anyone had ever driven.
Six months later the first Rolls-Royce 10 hp was unveiled at the Paris Salon. By 1907 the Silver Ghost completed a 15,000-mile RAC-observed trial with zero involuntary stops – earning the title “the best car in the world”. In 1911 the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot appeared (modelled on Eleanor Thornton). In 1931 Rolls-Royce bought Bentley. In 1971 the company went bankrupt and was nationalised. In 1998 BMW bought the rights to the name and Spirit of Ecstasy; in 2003 the first Phantom VII rolled out of the new Goodwood factory.
Today every Rolls-Royce is still hand-built in Goodwood, England, by 2,500 craftsmen and women. A single car takes up to six months and 450 hours of labour. More than 60 % of every part is bespoke to the client’s order.
